Former President Leonel Fernandez has been unanimously selected as president of the European Union – Latin America and Caribbean Foundation. The Dominican Republic Ministry of Foreign Relations of the Dominican Republic presented the candidacy during the 13th meeting of National Coordinators of ECLAC in Quito, Ecuador.
Foreign Minister Andres Navarro said that the former President’s selection represented another triumph for Dominican diplomacy on the international scene. He said the position would be a platform for promoting European integration with Latin America and the Caribbean, placing the name of the Dominican Republic up high. He said that this also coincides with the DR taking over the temporary presidency of the Economic Commission of Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which will facilitate efforts between the foundation and ECLAC to strengthen regional integration with the Dominican Republic as a strategic center.
Created in May 2010 by the Sixth Summit of Heads of State and Government, the European Union-Latin America and Caribbean Foundation (EU-LAC Foundation) began operations in November 2011. It is based in Hamburg, Germany. The EU-LAC Foundation has 62 members: the 33 states of Latin America and the Caribbean, the 28 members of the European Union, and the European Union institutions.
The Foundation aims to transform the strategic partnership between the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean, which was adopted in 1999, into a strengthened and visible reality in which the respective societies participate actively.
For many years, the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode) of former President Leonel Fernandez has been a strategic partner of EU-LAC Foundation.
