The executive director of the National Hydraulic Resources Institute (INDRHI), Olgo Fernandez, has announced that the rain that fell as tropical storm Erika passed over the country has increased the water levels in some of the country’s dams but there is still a need to ration water for agricultural use.
He said that the Valdesia dam received 22 million cubic meters of rain, the Jiguey dam some 12 million and Hatillo dam 15 million. The Rincon reservoir had 2.7 million cubic meters of rain, the Tavera dam some two million, and Sabaneta dam enough to keep it around its minimum level.
He went on to say that the Sabana Yegua dam in Azua received enough rain to be able to help with agricultural irrigation but there was a need for more rain across the rest of the country for the irrigation restrictions to be lifted everywhere.
