Agriculture Minister Angel Estevez says that according to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), the Dominican Republic is now free of avian flu and can enter new international markets and double the national production of chicken and eggs.
He said that the OIE published a statement confirming that there was no more avian flu in the country as 70 months had passed since the last confirmed case in February 2009.
Estevez said that they had received requests for fertilized eggs and one-day old chicks from countries including El Salvador, Venezuela and Cuba.
He concluded by saying that the Dominican authorities were continuing to make significant progress in the area of animal health and sanitation to ensure the highest quality levels.
