Dominicans use of culture

According to the first National Survey of Culture carried out by the Central Bank and the Ministry of Culture, last year around two million people over the age of 15 attended cultural events and locations and around RD$5 billion was spent on cultural products.

The results of the survey were presented at a seminar held from 1 to 4 September 2015 in the Pedro Henriquez Urena National Library, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, the Spanish Cultural Center and the Organization of Ibero-American States.

According to the survey, 1.3% of the population attended some type of cultural event, which represents 63,453 people spending RD$517.9 million, of which 97.5% was for musical events.

Nineteen percent of the population had purchased cultural products, with 64% buying books and 37% magazines and newspapers.

When it comes to the Internet, 45% of the population over 15 had used it in the three months prior to the survey with 53% of those having Internet access at home. Twenty one percent of the Internet users used it to listen to music, 20% to watch films and videos and 19% to download music and videos. Thirty percent downloaded books and magazines with most using personal computers at 42% and 36% smart phones.
