Scientists have now dated the fossilized remains of an extinct monkey that were discovered in an underwater cave in the eastern province of La Altagracia in 2009.
Researchers discovered a shinbone embedded in limestone rock, belonging to the Hispaniola monkey, known as Antillothrix bernensis. The monkey was the size of a cat and was known to live in trees eating fruit and leaves. The monkey is thought to have become extinct in the 16th century
Experts at Grand Valley State University in the US state of Michigan used a specialized technique to model the three-dimensional shape of the monkey’s leg bone and discovered that the bone was around a million years old.
