One of the workers cleaning the tunnels of the Tavera-Bao reservoir in Santiago, died on Sunday, 13 September 2015. Jose Ignacio Gomez Diaz, 21, was from Monte de la Zanja, in Sabana Iglesia. According to reports, at least 25 workers had to be hospitalized after experiencing symptoms including nausea, dizziness, vomiting and headaches.
Sabana Iglesia Hospital director Loyda Luis King said that they are waiting for the results of tests that were sent to the United States. She said that they had not been able to establish the nature of the infection that affected the workers who were cleaning the tunnels that were infested with rats, cockroaches and bats.
The workers had been hired by the governmental National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (Indrhi) and the Dominican Hydroelectric Generation Company (EgeHid).
