Senate favors suspension of Notary Public Law; deputies support it

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Abel Martinez (PLD-National District) is backing the application of the new Notary Public Law 140-2015. The Supreme Court and business sectors say the law increases costs and red tape while contributing nothing to improve the security of legal transactions.

The president of the Senate Cristina Lizardo (PLD-National District) backs the suspension of the implementation of the law at least for a year and a bill for this purpose is under review in the Senate. Martinez, however, expressed his rejection of the changes. He denied that legislators had received kickbacks in return for passing the bill. He said that the correct thing to do would be to implement it for a year and then decide whether it needs to be revoked or amended.
