Dominican wins Ponce open water race

Dominican long distance swimmer Miguel Portes, representing the Body Shop Athletic Club has won first place in the Ponce Bay open waters crossing, with a time of 35 minutes 20 seconds and 60 tenths of a second in a “photo finish” against Colombian Isaias Taveras. He is the first Dominican to win the race. Portes is a four- time national champion and two-time Caribbean champion in open water events. The event attracts several of the best open water swimmers in the Central American and Caribbean area.

Portes has swum 50 km in 11 hours and 38 minutes. Last year he won the Swim Miami competition and became the first Dominican to win the 10k event in which 1,500 athletes from all around the world competed.
