More middle class than poor

Minister of Economy Temistocles Montas said yesterday, Thursday 17 September 2015 that the DR is again a country made up of mostly middle class people. He was commenting on the findings of a recently released World Bank report, “Economic Mobility and the Rise of Latin American Middle Class.”

He told the press that according to the report, while 28.2% of the population in the Dominican Republic was poor and 28% middle class in 2002, by 2015 the poor population had dropped to 25.9% and the middle class percentage had risen to 28.9%.

The study found that the DR was fourth behind Trinidad & Tobago, Peru and Panama in terms of average annual per capita GDP growth in Latin America and the Caribbean (2000-2010). Nevertheless, the report makes the point that several countries, including the Dominican Republic and Uruguay, had seen the size of their middle classes decline despite sustained economic growth.

From 1995 to 2010, the DR had the lowest growth and redistribution components of middle class growth in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The study also shows that there was downward mobility in the Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Argentina, Mexico and Venezuela from 1996 to 2009. Venezuela (1992-2006), Paraguay (1999-2009) and the Dominican Republic (1996-2009) were the three countries to show more population not originally poor entering poverty. The DR was the fourth country with percentages of population exiting middle class behind Venezuela, Paraguay, and Mexico.

The study reveals the DR is seventh in the region in downward mobility into poverty, after Nicaragua, Guatemala, Venezuela, Paraguay, Bolivia and Honduras.

In Argentina, Chile, and Peru, the middle class increased by more than 10% between 2000 and 2010, while in the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and Uruguay, it actually shrank.
