This evening, Monday 21 September 2015, the BBC is airing a documentary that features the extremely rare case of intersex children in Salinas, Barahona province, about an hour’s drive from Santo Domingo. When the babies are born they appear to be female but they go on to develop male sex organs at puberty.
The condition, attributed to a genetic mutation known as 5?-Reductase deficiency (5-ARD) and reproduced by intermarriage in the isolated village, has been documented for years. But now the BBC report states that the number of children aged 10 who are affected has more than quadrupled in the last six years.
