Complaints about document price rises in New York

Dominicans in New York are complaining about what they say are increases in the price of services and the cost of documents issued by the Dominican Republic consulate in the city.

Altagracia Rondon, Lucas del Rosario and Pedro Mendoza have accused Dominican consul Eduardo Selman of increasing the cost of issuing passports, certificates and other services without approval from the Ministry of Foreign Relations.

They said that a new passport at the Dominican consulate in New York costs US$170, and passport renewal is US$135. Both have been increased by between US$30 and US$40. They added that if someone loses their passport they have to pay US$45 for the declaration of loss and US$80 for a birth certificate. A minor accompanied by only one parent must pay US$85 for the authorization paper and they are charging US$80 for the translation of a birth certificate.
