Chamber of Deputies rejects Notary Public Law suspension

With a vote of 118 against and seven in favor, the Chamber of Deputies has rejected a motion for a year’s suspension of the implementation of the recently approved Notary Public Law 140-15. The Senate agreed to the suspension after the Supreme Court of Justice, civil society organizations and business entities pointed out the major obstacles and higher costs that the law has on transactions in the country. Practically the only beneficiary is the association of notary publics.

Nevertheless, the deputies accepted a proposal for its Justice Commission to present a proposal for amendments including the suggestions made for improvements to the law. Many of these same observations against the law were made before it was passed, but the legislators went ahead and passed the bill anyway.
