Elena Viyella: quality not yet there in extended school programs

Speaking at the US Chamber of Commerce luncheon forum yesterday, Wednesday 30 September 2015, the president of the Accion Empresarial por la Educacion (Educa), a non-governmental pro-education body, Elena Viyella criticized the allocations for education in the 2016 National Budget and called for the extended day program to be consolidated before the number of students attending it is increased. She said that several studies have proved that while there has been an increase in the number of hours in public school schedules, the traditional education model is still being implemented. Viyella said that changes must be made if an improvement is to be achieved in the quality of education.

She also called for increasing the early childhood school programs implemented by the government. She said that while coverage for children 0-3 years has doubled since 2013, it still only reaches 1% of this age group.
