DR defeats Canada in Norceca

Competing in the Norceca Women’s Continental Championship being held in Morelia, Mexico, the Dominican women’s volleyball team defeated Canada 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-20) yesterday, Thursday 1 October 2015, remaining undefeated in the event.

Canada started well taking advantage of Dominican initial errors. As the game progressed, however, the Dominicans showed their superior form.

Dominican Republic team captain Niverka Marte said: “We had a slow beginning and with confidence we went on to a better rhythm. We’ve been performing well and we are glad to have reached the gold medal match,” as reported by Norceca.

Captain Brittney Page of Canada attributed the loss to having ups and downs… “We needed to make better choices while spiking; we were too inconsistent”.

Dominican Republic coach, Brazilian Marcos Kwiek said “today we were lucky, the middle blockers didn’t perform well, and we had too many errors, the players are tired because it has been a busy year. In the end we accomplished our second objective in reaching the gold medal match”.

The tournament has also served to secure the Dominican Republic’s participation in the Rio Olympics Volleyball Qualification Tournament.
