As part of a wider conservation initiative for the Ozama and Isabela rivers, the Presidential Ozama-Isabela Commission and the Ministry of the Environment planted hundreds of trees in the El Cachon area in San Isidro over the weekend of 3-4 October 2015, beginning a month-long reforestation program, as reported in Diario Libre.
Hundreds of people took part in the program, planting trees in both watersheds. The program follows the work done in mid-September 2015 when major cleanups were carried out along the riverbanks in order to prepare them for trees and conservation.
Most of the people taking part were schoolchildren.
The Ozama watershed is a priority for the Ministry of the Environment given its strategic importance as a drinking water source for the greater Santo Domingo area as well as its enormous economic, tourism, environmental, social and urban potentials.
