With the arrival of the first cruise ship scheduled for this week, the international travel media is focusing on the new Amber Cove port in Maimon Bay, in the northern province of Puerto Plata. The new port was built in a tranquil cove west of Cofresi, Ocean World and Puerto Plata city. The Riu resorts (Merengue and Bachata) are nearby.
The first ship scheduled to arrive on 6 October is the 2,754-passenger Carnival Victory. The port was planned to accommodate up to 8,000 cruise ship passengers and 2,000 crewmembers daily.
President Danilo Medina is scheduled to attend the formal opening on Monday, 2 November 2015.
The two-berth Amber Cove Cruise Center Amber Cove was developed by Carnival Corporation and local shipping partner, the Rannik family of Grupo B&R at a cost of US$85 million to serve as base for exploring the attractions of the country’s north coast.
It is planned to host more than 250,000 cruise passengers in its first year of operation. Cruise ships had not visited the north coast for over 30 years. In addition to Carnival Cruise ships, the port expects to host stops by Holland America, Princess, Cunard and Costa lines.
In August 2015, prior to the opening of the port, Carnival hosted the travel press for a sneak preview. Representatives of Reuters, USA Today, Porthole, NY Daily News, Travel Weekly, Sherman’s Travel, Chris Cruises, Cruise Guy, Seatrade Cruise News, Travel Mavens, SATW, TravelPulse, Cruise Critic, TravelAge West, Ports & Bows (Canada.com), Cruise Week, Cruise Radio, News Press, Family Travel Network, Thrillist, Forbes, Huffington Post, Yahoo! Travel, CCTV America, CiaoBambino, Luxebeat, and the New York Times were invited.
