In response to widespread concern about the high dengue fever mortality rate, Public Health Minister Altagracia Guzman has appointed Dr. Nelson Rodriguez Monegro as deputy minister in charge of Collective Health in replacement of Dr. Jose Manuel Puello. Dr. Puello was promoted to the newly formed Public Health Management Department where he will lead a series of public health programs including dental health, senior citizens, maternity and infant health, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and mental health.
Rodriguez Monegro, who was in charge of Collective Health from 2006 to 2010, will be responsible for measures aimed at fighting dengue and other diseases.
A total of 73 dengue-related deaths have been officially notified so far this year and 24 provinces are on yellow alert due to the high incidence of the disease.
