Dominican export leaders Fernando Capellan of Grupo M, Samuel Conde of Zona Franca Multimodal Caucedo, Alberto Nogueira of Barcelo and Augusto Ramirez of Brugal concur that growing competition for international markets should be seen as an opportunity for Dominican exporters. They made the statements when participating in the Forbes Forum “The Future is Here” held yesterday at the JW Marriott Hotel in Santo Domingo. They called for export companies to prepare instead of reject the changes. Capellan concludes that the country has great potential for becoming a true exporter of light manufactured products, thanks to the trade opening. However, in order to achieve this, the government needs to be more alert to international conditions, embrace the new trade dynamics and join forces with local companies. Center for Export and Investment executive director Jean Alain Rodriguez also participated in the gathering.
As of late, Dominican authorities are studying how the newly approved Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) between the United States and 11 countries will affect Dominican trade.
