Seaweed to be controlled

The government is seeking bids for the purchase of barriers to hold back the seaweed that has been invading Dominican coasts.

The announcement was made at a meeting attended by Environment Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez, the director of the Executive Committee for Tourist Center Infrastructure (Ceiztur) at the Ministry of Tourism, Kirsis De los Santos, the president of the Dominican Federation of Municipalities, Juan de los Santos, deputy minister for Coastal and Marine Resources, Idalia Acevedo, and Domingo Contreras, who is the liaison between the Executive Branch and the local governments.

Kirsis de los Santos said that Ceiztur would be in charge of the purchase of the barriers that cost US$250 a square meter for Boca Chica, Juan Dolio and Guayacanes as well as other beaches on the south coast. She went on to say that this week they would begin an operation to collect the seaweed and would increase the brigades by another 700 people in addition to the current level of 581.
