Celso Marranzini: Politicians fear transporters

Former president of the National Business Council (Conep) Celso Marranzini says that while the Dominican Republic has made progress in road infrastructure, transport problems persist because politicians are afraid of the transporter unions. He described the leaders of the transport associations as “the owners of the country” during a panel discussion on the role of businesspeople in the country organized by Conep and the Grupo Estrategico Empresarial (GEE).

For years, the negligence of the government has allowed that the Contrado cartel of cargo transporters monopolize freight transport, at a higher cost to companies.
