Regarded as one of the best Dominican artists of all times, Eligio Pichardo was hired by the Dominican government to paint 75 murals in public schools nationwide. As part of this artistic project, 23 murals were painted at the Republica del Uruguay Primary School in Villa Francisca, Santo Domingo. Al Momento online newspaper reports that workers doing maintenance work at the public school painted over the artworks during the recent summer vacation, despite efforts by several authorities to ensure their preservation. Authorities are now warning schools to ensure that the error is not repeated in other schools where there are still works of art.
