Santo Domingo mayor Roberto Salcedo has expressed optimism that he will be the ruling PLD party candidate in the 2016 municipal election and will win the candidacy with 75% of the popular vote. He says the PLD has agreed to choose the candidate not in a party primary but depending on what the polls say. His main opponent is Domingo Contreras, a former city official, who is not as well known as the city mayor.
Salcedo, a previously popular TV host, was first elected mayor in 2002. He has been mayor of the National District from 2002-2006, 2006-2010, and 2010-2016.
