Detectives from the Human Trafficking Unit in Trinidad & Tobago announced a massive bust at a club in Penal on Saturday, 17 October 2015 with the arrest of 22 women from the Dominican Republic who are believed to be victims of a human trafficking ring.
A Syrian-born man and three Trinidadian men suspected of being the middlemen were also arrested.
As reported in The Trinidad Guardian, on Saturday night the women were found in various stages of undress, while two were found tied up in bed. The newspaper says it is believed that they had been brought into the country illegally and were being used as prostitutes.
Police Superintendant Hendron Moses of Trinidad later called on young women to be wary of advertisements placed in the media about job opportunities, since police believed this was one of the major ploys used to lure women by human traffickers. Women from several Caribbean islands including Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and Haiti have admitted to being lured into the country through newspaper advertisements.
