Understanding the traffic jams in Santo Domingo

The first director of the Metropolitan Transport Authority (Amet), Hamlet Hermann has published the first in a series of articles in Diario Libre on road transport in Santo Domingo. He describes Santo Domingo as a “failed city” and said the chaos would continue for much longer because more and more people are buying vehicles while the roads are the same. He wrote that the problems were caused by disorganized urban development and that priority was given to speed and not to constant flow of vehicles. In the articles, he plans to explore the political and social reasons behind the huge traffic jams the city is currently experiencing.
