Taiwan cuts aid due to unsolved murder

The China Post reports that Taiwanese lawmakers froze NT$20 million (more than US$600,000) yesterday, Wednesday 21 October 2015 as part of the Foreign Ministry’s aid budget to the Dominican Republic to pressure Dominican authorities to solve the case of a murdered Taiwanese diplomat. Julia Ou, 55, was a secretary at the Overseas Community Affairs Council posted in Santo Domingo. She was found dead in her apartment on 16 April 2012. The case has not yet been solved.

The newspaper quotes OCAC Minister Steven Chen’s previous accusation that the Dominican government has been reluctant to investigate the case and even barely responded to OCAC’s inquires about its progress.

Legislator Lin Yu-fang believes that freezing part of the aid budget could help increase the pressure on the Dominican Republic authorities to work harder to solve the cold case.
