Civil society group Centro Juan XXIII is calling on Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito to take the additional step and appeal the decision of the Penal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice that prevented the opening of a hearing in the corruption case against former director of the Office of Supervisory Engineers of the State (OISOE), now senator Felix Bautista. Bautista is also the organizational secretary of the ruling PLD. The case was filed away after a vote of 3-2.
In a statement, Centro Juan XXIII says that the government is trying to cover up corruption.
Centro Juan XXIII says that the next step taking the case to cassation in a high instance court to verify the interpretation of the law. The court of cassation is the appellate court of the highest instance in the Dominican judiciary.
The statement also points out that one of the greater weaknesses in the struggle against administrative corruption is the poor effectiveness of the law that obliges government officials to declare their personal assets transparently and honestly, due to the lack of the ruling for the application of Law 311-14 on the Declaration of Worth.
