Former Bar president accused of forging Interpol warrant

The former president of the Dominican Bar Association, Diego Jose (Babado) Torres, was arrested on Saturday, 24 October 2015 for his alleged links to Francisco Javier Mena Castillo. Mena is accused by the Public Prosecution Office of forging documents in order to lift an international arrest warrant against Jesus Pascual Cabrera Ruiz and his wife Claribel Amparo, who are sought in connection with a major drug trafficking case.

Mena Castillo is accused of forging the signature of his son-in-law, assistant anti-laundering prosecutor German Daniel Miranda Villalona in which the revocation of an order against Cabrera was made on the grounds that the case had been filed away.

Shortly afterwards, however, Judge Alejandro Vargas, of the Court of Permanent Attention of the National District ordered his release from the Ciudad Nueva jail, with the sole requirement that the lawyer report to the authorities on a monthly basis. However, the order will not be signed until today, Monday 26 October 2015.

Assistant prosecutor Bolivar Sanchez had requested the warrant against Torres, who was also caught on camera firing a gun during the attack on the PRD party headquarters on 26 January 2013.
