President Danilo Medina has defended his administration by saying that it manages the public finances responsibly, and avoids administrative corruption and wasteful spending. “We are acting with fiscal responsibility. We are spending absolutely what we have to spend, avoiding wasteful spending and administrative corruption. If any case does arise, they should be answerable in the courts, the way things should be,” he said.
He made the statement when accepting the presidential nomination for the minority party, Partido de los Trabajadores Dominicanos (PTD), a political ally of the PLD, on Saturday, 24 October 2015.
Medina said that he accepted that there were still many problems that need to be tackled decisively and that is why he was asking for four more years of government.
The statement came several days after the Supreme Court of Justice court of appeals dismissed the case against the former director of the Office of Supervisory Engineers of the State (OISOE), today senator Felix Bautista from being heard in the courts.
Last week PRM presidential candidate Luis Abinader presented a set of proposals for cutting wasteful spending in the 2016 National Budget now under review by the PLD-majority Congress. Abinader spotted chapters where savings of RD$25 billion could be made.
