Dominican Raul A. Mondesi could become the first baseball player to make his major league debut in a World Series, according to ESPN Stats & Information. The Kansas City Royals added the infielder from Double-A Northwest Arkansas to their roster on Tuesday. Mondesi is the son of former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Raul Mondesi, now turned politician in his hometown San Cristobal. Mondesi senior never made it to a World Series game.
Royals manager Ned Yost said that they were looking for flexibility. Mondesi can play second base and shortstop. He can bunt, and he brings an element of speed to the Royals’ roster, he said.
Mondesi, 20, hit .243 with a .651 OPS in 81 games for Northwest Arkansas this season. He stole 19 bases in 25 attempts.
With the addition of Mondesi, there are five Dominicans on the Royal Kansas City Royals team, including four pitchers. The pitchers are Johnny Cueto, Kelvin Herrera, Yordano Ventura and Edinson Volquez.
Overall, there are 11 Latin American players on the Kansas City Royals, including five Dominicans, three Venezuelans, one Puerto Rican, one Cuban and one Brazilian.
