New medical exam approved by Deputies

The Chamber of Deputies has approved a proposal that establishes the Single Competence Examination (EUC) for prospective medical practitioners in the Dominican Republic.

The proposal also establishes that under the EUC anyone with false certifications will not be able to qualify as a doctor for five years as well as incurring penal sanctions.

The proposal will now go to the Senate to be studied.

Health committee chairman Fabio Vargas said that one of the advantages of the EUC was that in the case of students who pass the exam but cannot find a residency in general medicine, the government will be obliged to find them an assistant post at a Primary Care Center until they find a residency post.

The new examination will not be provided by the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) but via the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology in partnership with other private and public institutions.
