Uber to start 2 November

Diario Libre reports that Uber will start offering the service in Santo Domingo on Monday 2 November 2015, according to email messages sent out to the people who have expressed an interest in joining the service. According to the newspaper, in recent weeks, prospective providers have been receiving information about the service. At the same time, transport cartel Conatra leader Antonio Marte has been threatening to stop the service.

As reported in Diario Libre, Marte has an online application for his Tuv Sud taxi company, which operates in a similar way to Uber, with the exception of being able to pay via the app.

Meanwhile, the Consejo de Administracion y Regulacion de Taxis (Cart) has warned Uber that it needs to register as a taxi base.

According to the newspaper, Cart is asking Uber to comply with regulations it has not required of other transporters. Ruiz admitted that only 11,000 of 20,000 taxis in operation have fulfilled this requirement.
