A teacher federation at the state university UASD (FAPROUASD) announced the cancellation of all classes at the UASD on Thursday and Friday (29-30 October 2015), demanding a 5% increase in the government budget allocation for the UASD. The current UASD budget is RD$650 million, making it by far the largest allocation per university student in the system. Studies have shown it would cost less per student for the government to pay tuition for students in private universities.
The university faculty members say that if the government does not meet the demand, the strike will be declared for an indefinite number of days.
The representatives of the faculty said the work stoppage was targeted for the main Santo Domingo campus and another 17 other campuses nationwide.
