The acting president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) Peggy Cabral was named Dominican ambassador in Italy based in Rome. The appointment comes after the PRD, in the 2012 presidential election the largest opposition party, allied with the ruling PLD after recent polls showed its followers were not enough for the party to maintain its political status.
The post in Italy has been vacant for several months after the return of the Dominican ambassador and the shutdown of the Italian Embassy in the Dominican Republic. The appointment had been rumored for months.
Diario Libre reports that President Danilo Medina sent a letter to the president of the Senate, Cristina Lizardo requesting the confirmation of Alba (Peggy) Cabral, widow of former PRD leader Jose Francisco Pena Gomez, as the new Dominican ambassador in Italy. Decree 311-15 dated 28 October 2015 carried the appointment.
