The Association of Cargo Truck Drivers (Asocaibe) paralyzed traffic on George Washington Avenue (the Malecon), demanding that they be allowed to use the street rather than being diverted to 27 February Avenue.
Dozens of heavy trucks full of sand and construction materials stopped near the Ministry of Foreign Relations up to Av. Maximo Gomez causing a major traffic jam.
Transit on the western stretch of the Malecon (Autopista 30 de Mayo) was also blockaded by Fenatrado truckers, as reported in Diario Libre.
The Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Bautista Rojas Gomez, met with union president Ramon Tavarez, and a group of truck drivers to try to address their demands regards to being stopped on the road for inspections of their permits to transport materials.
Other drivers said that if they were driving from Haina to San Pedro de Macoris they would normally go via the Malecon, but now they were being diverted onto Maximo Gomez Avenue to go along 27 February that takes much longer due to the high volume of traffic on these two avenues.
