No new cedula, no vote

Eddy Olivares, of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), has said that there are still a million citizens who have not applied for their new national identity card (cedula) that will allow them to vote in the general elections to be held on 15 May 2015. It is believed that most of those who have not obtained their ID card live overseas.

He said that the JCE will be rolling out a new campaign to encourage people to apply for their new ID card.

This election cycle is particularly important since citizens will not only be voting for the President but also for municipal and legislative candidates.

Olivares warns that because the JCE has to have ample time to prepare the voting registry, those who did not have their new cedula by the deadline would not be able to vote. The cutoff date for applying for the new cedula is 15 December.
