Education Minister Carlos Amarante Baret announced foreign teachers will be hired to improve the skills of the teachers that are training teachers at Dominican universities and institutes around the country. He said that PhDs in mathematics and sciences will be hired to train the teachers.
Amarante made the comments in an interview on Hoy Mismo on Color Vision Channel 9 after the Ministry of Education published the results of the placement tests taken by 36,884 graduates in Education that are applying to work in public schools. Of those, only 11,479 passed the test, with 69.9% failing.
The state university, UASD had the largest number of candidates to teachers, with 12,073, of which only 3,828 passed the placement test. The highest number passing the test were those studying at the teacher formation institute of the Ministry of Education, Isfodosu.
Amarante said this month new guidelines for training teachers will be approved and an admissions test will be required of those registering to study education. He said at present there are teachers only trained in elementary education employed as professors at public high schools.
El Dia recalls that a study carried out from 2009-2011 by the Ministry of Superior Education (Mescyt) revealed that more than 75% of those applying to study education came from low income families where the parental household income was below RD$9,000 a month, and 70% parents had not passed the elementary schooling level.
