Diario Libre has been covering the story on the registration by a third party of the Uber brand name. The newspaper says that the National Industrial Property Office (Onapi) recommends that Uber, the electronic ride-sharing transport company, request the annulling of the name registration made by third parties. This is established in Art. 92 and Art. 74-75 of Law 20-00.
Uber Technologies Inc. had requested the registration of the commercial name UberX to Onapi on 21 August 2014 and this was approved in a certificate on 15 January 2015. But during that same period, Kelby Heriberto Santana and Osiris Francisco Lopez Santana requested the registration of the commercial names Uber Taxi and Uber Tecnologia y Comunicaciones on 17 November 2014 and this was approved on 21 November 2014. Uber Taxi name was presented on 29 October 2014 and this was approved on 16 January 2015.
A source inside Onapi told Diario Libre that the second approval was a mistake on behalf of the government office.
