Runoff election in Haiti

The Provisional Electoral Council in Haiti announced a runoff election for Haiti’s presidency is scheduled for 27 December 2015. The two top finishing candidates from the 25 October 2015 poll are government party-backed agricultural businessman Jovenel Moise (PHTK), and former state construction chief 48-year old engineer Jude Celestin, backed by the LAPEH.

It had been announced there were 5.8 million registered voters. Nevertheless, there were only 1,538,393 valid votes. As reported, 54 parties participated in the election.

Jovenel Moise received 511,992 votes or 32.8% of the total and Jude Celestin 394,390 or 25%.

This is the second time Celestin runs for office. In the previous 2010 presidential election, Celestin had the backing of former Haiti strongman Rene Preval. Celestin became known for his efforts at clearing the rubble and helping people following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

The preliminary results are:

Jovenel Moise (PHTK) 511,992 votes 32.81%

Jude Celestin (LAPEH) 394,390 votes 25.27%

Moise Jean Charles (Pitit Dessaline) 222,646 votes 14.27%

Maryse Narcisse (LAVALAS) 110,049 votes 7.05%

Jean Baptiste Eric (MAS) 56,671 votes 3.63%

Jean Henry Ceant (Renmen Ayiti) 39,005 votes 2.50%

Sauveur Pierre Etienne (OPL) 30,227 votes 1.94%

Ivenson Steven Benoit (Konviksyon) 17,851 votes 1.14%

Steeve Khawly (Bouclier) 16,791 votes 1.08%

Samuel Madistin (MOPOD) 13,656 votes 0.88%
