21% more jobs at power companies, despite losses

The country’s three main power distribution companies (EdeNorte, EdeSur and EdeEste) have added 1,338 new workers between them, or 20.8% more employment. The payroll has been increased despite the fact that the government says it has to subsidize the power distribution companies’ losses with US$1 billion a year.

As reported in Diario Libre, the number of employees in the government-operated power distributors had increased by 914 in the last Leonel Fernandez administration (from January 2009 to August 2012), or 16% in three years and eight months. During the period from August 2012 to July 2015, however, now under Danilo Medina PLD administration, an additional 1,338 workers were added to the payroll.
