Puerto Plata’s art murals catch on

Amateur and professional artists are transforming the north coast, one mural at a time. A series of new public art murals is gracing walls around Puerto Plata and the nearby tourist destinations of Cabrera, Cabarete and Sosua. The murals have been painted along main streets and in residential areas. Puerto Plata already had two well-known murals, one by Checo Merette depicting humpback whales on the fuel tanks off the Malecon done in 2008 and another on the Antera Mota public school in the city. A new movement has inspired dozens more muralists with contemporary art now decorating the city.

The appearance of the murals coincides with the arrival of cruise ship passengers now that Carnival has opened its Amber Cove port at Maimon Bay, a 20-minute drive from the city center.

Murals started being painted in 2006 in the northern city of Salcedo, inspired by the heroism of the three Mirabal sisters, followed by another 100 murals in Villa Tapia, Salcedo and Tenares, including work by leading artists Elsa Nunez, Alberto Bass and the late Candido Bido, all of which can still be viewed.
