DR traffic accidents kill more than any illness

Between 2,000 and 3,000 people are killed in traffic accidents in the Dominican Republic every year. This toll is far higher than deaths from any disease or illness. Representatives of the vehicle insurance sector expressed their concern over the staggering numbers yesterday, Thursday 11 November 2015.

Automotive Center (CAA) president Juan Osiris Mota pointed out that in addition to the fatalities, thousands of people are injured in road accidents. He told reporters from 7 Dias that many young people are being incapacitated as a result.

“We are worrying a lot about dengue but traffic accidents are killing many more people in this country than any disease that I know of,” he said.

Mota called for a stronger application of Traffic Law 241 and a greater awareness on the part of drivers. CAA general manager Luis Torres says that traffic accidents cost the government RD$50 billion every year.

The CAA is similar to the AAA in the United States. It provides assistance to the affiliates of 11 insurance companies.
