Central Electoral Board (JCE) president of the Roberto Rosario warned on Wednesday, 10 November 2015 that the 15 December deadline for getting the new identification and voter registration card known as the “cedula” would not be extended.
He reminded the public that any citizens who have not obtained the new document by that date would not be able to vote in the 2016 elections.
Rosario says that more than 6.6 million Dominicans already have the new card. According to El Caribe, Rosario said that political parties should also encourage Dominicans who live overseas to obtain the new document, which is needed for voting in the 15 May 2016 general elections.
The JCE president added that preparations for next year’s elections are about 33% complete, according to the work program set out last year.
