Pediatrician Waldo Ariel Suero has been elected president of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD), which represents doctors, mainly working in public hospitals. Suero is best known for the long strikes he organized in his previous two terms at the helm of the union.
According to a first bulletin on the Wednesday, 11 November 2015 election, Suero received 3,044 votes (72%) of the counted ballots against Hugo Bautista Martich, who received 863 votes, or 20%. The ruling PLD’s candidate, Clemente Terrero, received 158 votes. Dr. Aurora Sierra obtained 191 votes.
Out of a total of 27,700 CMD members, 11,834 were eligible to vote.
This will be Suero’s fourth term as CMD leader.
Suero has said that he will work for better conditions for doctors, including wage increases, reduced working hours and better pensions. He will also be campaigning for the government to allocate 5% of GDP to the health sector.
