Leonel Fernandez may lead mission to Venezuela

Former President Leonel Fernandez might head the United Nations South America observers’ (Unasur) mission that will travel to Venezuela to monitor the country’s parliamentary elections on 6 December 2015.

Fernandez is the president of the ruling PLD.

According to an unnamed diplomatic source from Unasur, Fernandez will be appointed to lead the mission, but his office has not confirmed or denied this.

The question of who should lead the mission has generated some friction among the members of Unasur who have not been able to reach agreement with the Superior Electoral Court in Brazil, which declined to form part of the mission last month due to what they called a lack of respect from Venezuela about the guarantees necessary for an “objective, impartial and comprehensive observation”.

The Brazilian electoral authority also revealed that the selection of former Defense Minister, Nelson Jobim to head the mission had been dismissed, apparently following a veto from the Venezuelan authorities.

The Organization of American States and the European Union have also expressed interest in sending missions to monitor the election, while US politicians have said they would prefer an external scrutiny of the results as a step towards solving the country’s economic and political crisis.

To date, only Unasur has been invited by the Venezuelan authorities.
