Representatives of the main political parties have been making their positions clear in favor or against a proposal from Central Electoral Board (JCE) member Eddy Olivares, who stated that the election campaign would begin on 15 December 2015.
The ruling PLD, represented by Cesar Pina Toribio, the PRD’s Jose Miguel Vasquez, and the PRSC’s Tacito Perdomo, have expressed their opposition to an early start.
Jose Marte Piantini of the main opposition PRM, however, is in favor of a longer electoral campaigning period.
According to the Electoral Law, the start of campaigning should at least 90 days before the date of the election, which this time will be 15 May 2016.
