AMET says motorcycles cause 80% of road deaths

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (AMET) is carrying out a weeklong accident prevention and driver awareness program in Santo Domingo. The emphasis is on respect for the traffic laws.

Yesterday, Wednesday 18 November 2015, during what AMET called “Black Wednesday”, the traffic agency focused on raising motorcyclists’ awareness of traffic safety and the urgent need for using their helmets at all times. According to AMET, motorcyclists are involved in 80% of traffic accidents in the Dominican Republic.

AMET’s communications director Diego Pesqueira told reporters from El Nuevo Diario that during the operation at the intersection of 27 February and Maximo Gomez avenues they provided educational information to more than 30,000 motorcyclists in several parts of the country. Some 10,000 motorcyclists have received reflective vests as well as the written materials and wristbands that the AMET gives these drivers.
