Traffic accidents up 6%

Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito says that robbery is up 3% this year, and traffic accidents 6%. He said the homicide rate is 17 per every 100,000 inhabitants. He explained that more than eight deaths per 100,000 is considered an epidemic. Dominguez Brito said so far this year, statistics show that there have been 623 homicides, of which 77% occurred on public roadways, many involving people who had been drinking alcohol.

As the keynote speaker at the Mexican-Dominican Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Santo Domingo’s Sheraton Hotel yesterday, Wednesday 18 October 2015, Dominguez said that the DR faces the great challenges of reducing traffic accidents, where most deaths are caused by reckless driving by motorcyclists.

In his talk on “Juridical Security and Citizen Safety,” Dominguez said that the new Criminal Code has not yielded the expected results. He advocated for amendments and changes such as being able to present statements and not having to constantly attend the hearings.
