Follow la Chiva Gloria

Follow the appearances of Gloria, an initiative from the Arte Arawak Foundation. Six sculptures of goats, with another six soon to be completed, are on display at malls, restaurants, museums and cultural centers around the country. “The idea of the project is to bring art closer to the people,” said Mildred Canahuate, director of the Fundacion de Arte Arawak. She says the traveling exhibition also seeks to raise awareness of the importance of caring for art on show in public places.

She said the idea was born when visual artist Antonio Guadalupe created a figure of a goat for the Museum of Contemporary Art, sponsored by the Fundacion Arawak. The image went on to be used for other events they organized, and was featured on mugs, posters, t-shirts and more. Canahuate then convinced people and organizations to fund the sculptures of the goats, to continue the initiative. So the first artist to paint the fiberglass sculpture of La Chiva Gloria, which is 5 feet tall and 5 feet long, was its original designer Antonio Guadalupe, followed by Amaya Salazar, Angel Urrely, Iris Perez, Jose Pelletier and Moises Pellerano. A curatorial committee is deciding on the next six, based on quality and attractiveness. Between 20 and 25 replicas of each figure have been produced and are for sale. The proceeds will go to Fundacion Arawak to fund events that promote visual arts.

La Chiva Gloria was first exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art from 5 June 2014. During November, La Chiva Gloria was on display at the Centro Leon in Santiago. The exhibition continues in December at the Centro Cultural Perello in Bani and the plan is for it to travel east in early 2016.
