Yesterday afternoon, Tuesday 24 November the Chamber of Deputies approved the new draft of the Civil Code Procedure in the Dominican Republic, which abolishes around 27 laws.
The new Code was approved after three hours of reading and after agreeing with the report made by the special committee that contained 52 pages and around 1,370 articles. The current law has 1,379 articles.
The proposal will now be sent to the Senate for study.
The chairman of the special committee, Deputy Hugo Nunez said that they agreed with the suggestion of the Constitutional Court that no sentence should exceed 30 minimum salaries.
They also took into account suggestions from the Central Electoral Board (JCE), the Audit Office (Camara de Cuentas) and the Public Defenders’ Office that if someone heading one of these organizations was being investigated, they could be interrogated in their homes.
They also stated that the new Code would introduce the new element of a a civil judge as a guarantee to the system.
