The high cost of traffic jams

A front-page story in Diario Libre today, Wednesday 25 November 2015, examines the high cost of traffic jams. It mentions that the traffic jams on 27 de Febrero and John F. Kennedy-Duarte intersections, two of the city’s main west-east crossings, could be adding RD$6 billion a year to drivers’ budgets. Grupo SoluVialRD says that the stretch from Km. 9 of the Duarte Highway to Leopoldo Navarro Avenue should be covered in six minutes, but during peak hours it takes up to 40 minutes or an additional RD$200 in fuel for each vehicle. He said the situation affects more than 50,000 drivers who use the roads every day.

SoluVialRD’s figures are based on research carried out by the Instituto Tecnologico de Santo Domingo (INTEC).

He said the traffic jams have forced people to leave up to two hours early and leave their jobs two hours later to avoid the bottlenecks.
